Dad Says You’re A Sex Fiend With Ashley Logan
It’s an all-new ep, with Mary and Ashley getting into the wild weirdness of midlife dating: sober first dates, the supremacy of Hinge, and trying to figure out who is actually behind the dating profile. They unpack body count discourse, sexual double standards, porn-fueled expectations, dating as a single mom, and why honest conversations about intimacy are long overdue.

SPEAKER_00So, Mary, I have a question for you. Uh-huh. So we're live. We're live. We're recording. Yeah?
SPEAKER_03What you what would you like to talk about today? I mean, I guess I mean the the past week, I don't even know what happened this past week. Um since we've last been on the air. Actually, a lot's happened. A lot has happened. Sebastian went back to school. Did your kids go back to school?
SPEAKER_00They did. Yeah. Yeah. Their first day was last was Tuesday. And I was uh it's been good. All my kids are in one school, one drop-off, which is really Yeah. Second year of that, final year of that. I've heard that's a whole thing. It's a whole thing. It's a whole, whole, whole thing. Wait, I have to tell you a really funny story. Okay. Okay. So have you seen the movie Now and Then? Uh is it old? It's um late 90s, and it's about four girls who are coming of age in suburban Indiana, and they in the 60s. And so it flashes back to like the four girls and their lives together, and then then they're older, and you know, they come together while one of them's having the baby, and one of those is a pretty all-star cast. Like we've got Rosie O'Donnell, uh, Demi Moore, Melanie Griffin, and Tom Hanks' wife turned country singer. Her name is Rita Wilson. Rita Wilson. And she's beautiful. And then the younger girls are we've got Christina Ricci, Gabby Hoffman, Thora Birch, and then um a girl named Ashley, spelled A-S-H-L-E-I-G-H, but I can't remember what her she was she in um was she in uh in Twilight?
SPEAKER_03I don't remember. But anyway, go on.
SPEAKER_00What's it called again? Now and then. And it's like a great coming of age story, incredible soundtrack with um oh god, there's even um Ashley Aston Moore. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Demi Moore's in it too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And her child. And um Rumor Willis is in it as plays a child. But in any event, so this coming of age story is like these four girls are very different. One's parents are country clubbers, one's mom died, one's parents are going through a divorce, and the other has like a mom who's like very, very rigid and um um all the mom tropes, all the evil mom tropes. And so they're walking down the street and they meet this hippie dude who is played by someone whose name I cannot remember right now, but he was like a hot icon in the 90s. Um and the character whose mom was the tight ass, she is also a tight ass, and she says something like, My mom says all hippies are sex fiends. Okay. So was it Hank Azaria? No, no, it was I don't want to get lost on a design. I'm about to give you a punchline, but we'll reserve return to it. Um so that's word. Like, so I I showed this movie to my kids, and it's got all sorts of coming of age references about boners and getting boobs, and and my kids, my two sons are six and eight, and my daughter's 10. And so a lot of the references went over their heads. But apparently what got locked into my um my six-year-old's head is that hippies are sex fiends. And so fast forward, um, and my my son comes home from being at his dad's house, and he says, Mom, dad says you're a sex fiend. I am divorced, by the way. And I start dying laughing. And I was like, What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_01He called you a hippie. He called me a hippie. He called you a hippie, he called you a hippie. And then my son translated that to you're a sex fiend.
SPEAKER_03And you're like, you're like, I am, but why is why is my ex-husband telling why is your father telling you? How did that come up in conversation? Oh my god, how wait, also, but also was he calling you a hippie pejoratively, or was he telling calling you a pity hippie is like your mom is just a free spirit?
SPEAKER_00I think I I'm gonna assume positive intent.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's nice, that's good.
SPEAKER_00That it was a because I am like I love nature. I love being outside. Like I am by and large a total free spirit, and you could put me in the the hippie category. Me too. Yes. Like wound tight hippie.
SPEAKER_03And but anyway, um I'm the wound tight hippie, or you're the wound tight hippie.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, you are.
SPEAKER_03You're I'm a hippie. I like I like nature, and I mean, I, you know, I've I'm a sex fiend.
SPEAKER_00I mean, come on. So I text my ex and I was like, um, Sammy said you called me a sex fiend. He's like, what? He's never seen the movie, he has no idea what the reference is. And I called you a sex machine.
SPEAKER_03Just kidding, it's funny.
SPEAKER_00What did he what did he what did he say? Um uh he's like, I did not say that. I was like, JK, and had to explain the the joke because I got it. But um, so anyway, highly recommend now and then if you want to go back to a simpler time of girls riding bikes and coming of age and finding out that your parents don't have all the answers, but your friends can be like the the family you choose. Um, but just be mindful of watching it with those who are under 10 years old because you might be coined a sex fiend by your six-year-old.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, that sounds about right. That sounds about right. Um, we we just finished Stranger Things. Have you watched Stranger Things?
SPEAKER_00Yes, I have. I actually haven't watched the last two seasons. Um Well, I think the last the last one was when um, you know, dude gets gets kidnapped. Um is there one season after that or two?
SPEAKER_03Well, the dude getting kidnapped, Will, in the very first episode.
SPEAKER_00That's the that's the very first episode. No, the dad, the old guy who's like taken prisoner in by the Russians, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I uh I had this like I I I uh that show was really good. Season four is immaculate. And then season five, I think, came after some like uh strikes and you know, industry brew haha that kind of delayed the season, and then it was written weird. Um it had a satisfying ending. I'm not I'm not mad about it, but season four was just an incredible season of television. Um, but we just watched it and it's you know, it it the way that um Mike Wheeler's mom paid by the gorgeous Carla Buono, who uh was played one of Don Draper's um paramours in Mad Men, that's how I remember her. But they like wait, but like in the it's like every single episode has her nailing an 80s fashion trope that is like so perfectly Jean niecey. Like she looks like my mom in like if you just like did like a flip book of like t of like 80s photos, it was like my mom, my mom, my mom, my mom. It was like big crazy perm, chic shortcut, like chalky blue makeup, really pale, like just you know, shaker knit, like space dyed. I mean, of the outside of the show being amazing, just the fashions and stranger things, just speaking of like older shows and the fashions and the things and the that didn't really connect all that well.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, I think you're I think you're great, but I just also want to tell you that it's Brendan Fraser who was the hippie. So like he is a sex machine.
SPEAKER_03I mean a fiend.
SPEAKER_00I mean Yeah. Hi, hi Brendan Fraser.
SPEAKER_03I like that he was so hot and then he disappeared and then he came back, and now everybody loves him again. I think that's pretty pretty remarkable.
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna lie. So do you want to go into like more risque territory today? Yes, yes, give it to me. So I'm hitting hinge hard.
SPEAKER_03Oh, go on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, going up. You're going hard. So is it just hinge? Are you only on hinge? I'm only on hinge. It's all I can, it's it's really the apps are really, really overwhelming for a lot of reasons. And the reason is like if you're a normal person on there and I I I don't know, like I could go on for one day and get like 50 likes, and then I have to pause my account to sift through to see if they're like anyone that I'm interested in, and then I'll resume and so I'll have conversations and move on and kind of go from there. But I took the summer off because it's really overwhelming. And there's two things I want to talk about. One, Hinge has the best selection, but the worst infrastructure. And when I'm talking infrastructure like Bumble, you can call someone through the app, you can send photos through the app, you can voice note, you can do everything through it. Hinge, you can't send photos. So like I couldn't be like dick pics. Yeah, I mean, I left Bumble because of unsolicited dick pics. And um, but I will say the technology is so much better on Bumble. It was developed by a female and Whitney Heard is her name and um, and then Hinge, but has like a better variety and yada yada. So um you have to like go through these whole things of like, am I talking to a real person? But you can't like ask them to be like, send me a picture of you right now to like get to make it. Holding a newspaper so you know that like holding up a newspaper, right? Um, all of those things. And um it's really interesting, like trying to one, like keep your heart open, keep an open mind, and also like keep yourself safe, like not wanting knowing that like the app itself is limited. I don't really care to give my phone number out to someone that I haven't met yet or have no connection to. And um, so it's just like constant battle, but I'm like coming into the weekend where I don't have my kids from Thursday to Monday morning, and I am determined to have four dates. For this coming up weekend? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03How have you spotted any yet? Or have any been scheduled? No, not one. Not one scheduled. And is there a is there a pot is there like a prospect or are you just like thinking about the other thing?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's several prospects. How many? So it's like I think I'm in active conversations with nine people. Ooh, wow.
SPEAKER_03Okay. And are you having like the same conversation with all nine people or are you like interesting? Okay.
SPEAKER_00No, all different.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00How do you are there is there, are there like emerging categories? It's interesting because like you can like, I love a good banter, so we can like get stuck in a like one one guy we're talking all about like fishing in the northern lights, another guy we're talking all about travel, another guy we're talking about like um, like he asked me my love languages. And instead of me just like listing them, I like gave examples of them. And he was like, Ooh.
SPEAKER_03Well what's an example of your love language that you gave him that you were willing to show this stranger.
SPEAKER_00Um, like your hand on my knee instead of physical touch, like listing that, or you know, doing something nice that makes me feel supported instead of acts of kindness. And um, so you know, those those kinds of things. Sorry, I'm just curious just for future reference. I like I like the question, but um so it's all it's all very interesting. And the what's kind of funny, and I think you'd be interested in this, is like very much like if you're getting like a psychic reading from someone virtually, like you question like, can you get the same um impact from someone energetically online? And the answer is 100%. Like you can absolutely get a sense of who someone is um just by having some, you know, I mean an online conversation with them. So I guess that I'll report back.
SPEAKER_03Well, I want can we like give some pseudonyms and talk about like, you know, I want to I wanna like kind of I want report back. I want to like have some information right now that we can then follow up on. Like, I mean, are any of them like are there a top is there a top three? Sure, yeah, totally. Okay. And what's what are the top three? Like, give pseudonyms. We'll call first one Jake. How how's Jake? Have have have a like Cabin Boy. Okay, yeah, cabin boy. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00He is Cabin Boy is Northern Lights and Fishing. Yeah. Okay. Got a cabin up in far northern Wisconsin, runs a dog walking business, is uh 35, so like eight years younger than me, and single, but lives nearby and like just seems to have a very, very positive attitude. So I'm like, oh well, you know, having a conversation, fine. And he lives in the Chicago area? Yeah. Okay. Lives in the suburbs, not too far from me. Is he divorced? Not that I know of. Hasn't, hasn't, haven't. We've just been talking about fishing in Northern Lights. I don't know. Got it. Cool. All right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Don't need to know. Don't need to know. Find out. All right, number two, what's what's his deal? Number two.
SPEAKER_00Um, what what will we call him? Uh we'll call him Colin. Like C-A-L-L-I-N. So like Colin Firth.
SPEAKER_03Okay, but I'm trying to I'm trying to give a funny thing like a la cabin boy. Okay, so but Colin. Okay, so Colin wait, so Colin Firth, is that like Mr. Darcy Kellen Firth or Mr. whatever he was in Bridget Jones? Oh, no, no.
SPEAKER_00I was thinking of Colin Farrell. That's who I mean.
SPEAKER_03Like Irish even Irish Irish. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Is he Faral?
SPEAKER_00You'll find out. Okay. Um why is he Colin Farrell? Um, like very much likes Ireland, is wearing a sweater in photos. Um like a cable knit? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like a white, like burly like might not be soft.
SPEAKER_00Like like picture like like dude in beanie with a sweater cardigan, looking like like he belongs in Dublin.
SPEAKER_03He has like a leather-bound uh laptop cover.
SPEAKER_00Satchel, probably. Probably. Yes. All of this. Divorced. Okay. Um, no children.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Works remotely, lives in the northern suburbs, and has 43, 45, something like that. So uh comparable age. No children.
SPEAKER_03Okay, but he and his only identifying characteristic is that he likes Ireland. And and poetry. That's that's the love language guy. Yeah, that's the love language guy. What kind of poetry?
SPEAKER_00Like his own or a lot of people. Seems like a romantic. Um I've got to find it. Yeah. Yeah. Like a capital R romantic. Capital R romantic. And by the way, I'm like a fucking skittish chihuahua. Um so for me, I'm like, I have to really be like, okay, I'm gonna say the thing I'm thinking, and all right, we'll see.
SPEAKER_03So that's what Lord Byron does with that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Although Irish, we're probably looking more at Yates. Go on.
SPEAKER_00Oh my God. Look at you bringing out your English lit or modern lit.
SPEAKER_03This is me using my degree for the first time. What's your degree in? In 26 years. Uh, I have a double in English and art history. Dude, did you know that we're the same? We are?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I was an English major, art history, art minor. Not history, but art.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I can't make any art, but I can think and talk about it. I actually have a friend, like I uh I have a friend I was at a party with this weekend. She was um, we were talking about how we want to do a a movie, like a like a book club, but for movies where we watch a movie and then we discuss it afterwards. And we're trying to figure out how we can be like, this isn't gonna be like a excuse to drink wine. This is going to be like the like the study session with a TA after the class. Like I wanna like, like I wanna call it the yes, there will be a this will be on the test movie club where we like actually break down like difficult, like, you know, break down like not actually go for it. Yeah, yeah. And I'm like, I'm like, I want it to be like college. I just want to think again. I just want to like talk about metaphor and synectity and you know, like whatever. Anyway, so go on. Sorry. Yes, art history. That's what I was in. It was art history. Poetry. Well, I'm just I know a lot about it.
SPEAKER_00Me too.
SPEAKER_03I love this.
SPEAKER_00I love this. We need to talk more about literature and and go into deep analysis of all of we should go to an art gallery together.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, that would be so fun. Get real stoned, is that what you're saying? And talk about uh kioscuro and whatever the fuck. Um, so the poet from Ireland, okay. And then who's our third candidate?
SPEAKER_00Third can uh we'll call him Maui. Okay. Um, seems to very much enjoy travel and adventure forward in the like you might be the person I'm looking for type of category. Oh, he's looking to settle down. He's looking to lock shit down. He's like, let's fucking go. Um, so those are the the top three contenders. There's another one who's a Hold on, hold on. Wait, I got more questions with Maui. Um age? 48. Okay.
SPEAKER_03All right. Married, I mean, sorry, divorced? No idea.
SPEAKER_00Uh lives in the city, no kids.
SPEAKER_03Okay. And does he do any of these people have jobs or have we gotten there yet? They seem to have jobs. Okay. Um I mean, they probably do, but it's just like what? You know, I I no, they all have jobs. But jobs don't matter. Jobs aren't who we are. Uh okay. So there's one more.
SPEAKER_00This is funny. Find out he is a non-drinking um actually Maui's also non-drinking, um, bar owner, and he owns a bar that I used to frequent way back in the day. Mm-hmm. Okay. Yeah. Uh a very divy place that is was founded in 1936 and serves popcorn. So it's the hangy uppie.
SPEAKER_01No! Don't just wish it was. I wish it was.
SPEAKER_03The the the seedy back rooms of the hangyuppie. Or is it the hang-up? I don't, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I've actually spelled hangy uppie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I've never darkened the doorway of it, but um You never I've never been to the Hangyuppie. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Your uh when's your birthday? You know, my birthday's first. For my birthday, we're going to the hangup.
SPEAKER_01And getting what? We're drinking.
SPEAKER_00Wait, no, we're not drinking. What do we like? We're dancing. Chlamydia dance? We're gonna get chlamydia at the end. Well, that's you don't get chlamydia from entering a room. Yeah, you do. Um so we're at the hang up.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so he owns a bar.
SPEAKER_00He owns he owns a CD popcorn bar.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but like let me also tell you that what it's like to be trying to date as a single mom of three who has their kids a lot, particularly during the week, um, and uh non-drinking. So to like to go out on dates and to do all those things, like normally you take the edge off by having a cocktail or doing whatever. And that is not something that I do. Can do. But yeah. Um I for those listening, I am four years alcohol free, not in recovery, but just made the choice to abstain for a lot of reasons. Mary, how long have you been alcohol-free?
SPEAKER_03It'll be five years on September 18th, which is crazy. I mean, almost I'm almost five five years without alcohol. Actually, I did accidentally have a drink once, accidentally didn't. I thought it was alcohol free. I'm like, why is this making me feel weird? And I'm not I'm not resetting my alcohol-free date because of that. I didn't know it was happening.
SPEAKER_00I completely agree. I think in my first year, I had a couple of like a glass of wine or two, especially in like those first six months where it was just like I still wasn't yet comfortable enough in my skin of being alcohol free, and then let all of that go. But I still have my date as my as my date. Yeah. Um okay, so go on. Sober, be trying to date sober is hard. Trying to date sober as a single mom and all those things. It's uh it's tricky.
SPEAKER_03What's the worst part of it? What's what's the trickiest part about it? Finding places to bang? No. Yeah. I mean, any place is a place to bang if you've got enough motivation.
SPEAKER_00That's one. Um the other part is particularly in the suburbs, very small well. And if you are having conversations with people, you might find that the person your friend just hooked up with is the person that you hooked up with. And you can tell by their moves.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Uh, do you remember? God, there was a I remember there was this ah, it was it was a women were using TikTok to like, in the early days of TikTok, they were like using ways to triangulate shitheads. Like, like it was it was like a an account that was called like, Did we date the same guy or something? Like it was and uh there was some West Elm guy. There was a guy that worked for West Elm in New York City who basically just literally went on a date with every available woman in Manhattan and Brooklyn. And all these women were triangulating like the way he would love Bomb and the things he did. He did like the exact same thing with the same women, and it was like West Elm. He's like West M Paul or West Elm, but he worked for West Elm anyway. That guy's about to get a blip and is Googling. Uh, but so you're finding guys that dated your friends? Yeah. Yeah. Oh. Yep. Okay. Are there are there red flags, or is it just like, yeah, I got that guy. Oh yeah, him too. Marketing gym. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I've there there's uh there's some once I get a little more distance from this particular one, I have a great story to share. So um, yeah. So ultimately it's like, yeah, the the smaller pool is of note. And then there's also all of the like, you know, it's funny because remember like back in the day when you had a gay friend and then you'd like have another gay friend and be like, oh my god, you guys should go out. And you think that because you're two gay people that like it's gonna work.
SPEAKER_03They would automatically be interested in each other.
SPEAKER_00So that also happens a lot. Like you're automatic because you're single and divorced, that you're automatically gonna have a connection with someone. And now, don't get me wrong, I love the camaraderie that comes from like the shared experience. Like being a single parent in is really tough. And going through a divorce is really tough. So like there's there's things that you just know about each other overall. But then I like will sit down with with over coffee with someone and they'll be like, fuck my ex. And I'm like, oh, or like, oh, she was a she was a psycho bitch. She never had any fun. She never, and I'm like, oh my God, you did nothing around the house and she hated your guts and you sucked the life out of her. She had to leave you. Or like the ones who have no idea why their marriages went wrong and haven't done the work. And so, like, then like you layer the fact that I'm like spiritual and like very, very, very into personal growth and consciousness. And so um, I have a very small pool. So that's why I'm like, all right, let's let's see what you got.
SPEAKER_03Irish guy and dog walker and it feels like when they're going on and on about their shitty ex, they're basically saying, like, don't do this. You better not be like this. Like, that's kind of like how I interpret that kind of like, you know, like it's a it's like it's like, don't be crazy. And it's like, then, you know, put the dishes in the dishwasher.
SPEAKER_00Well, and then there's like the the the red flags on a dating profile are like, I'm looking for someone drama free. And I'm like, oh, you're looking for someone who doesn't have an opinion. And um, you know, I the there's all sorts of like little flags that you can read into. Yeah. Um I also I also automatically delete Pisces. I I love I married a Pisces and I'm just been surrounded by them for most of my life. And I I just if your sign is Pisces, I'm that's right.
SPEAKER_03February for half of March?
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. February, I like February Pisces more.
SPEAKER_01But no, no, not for me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't think that's a glimpse into experiences with Pisces.
SPEAKER_03That's fun that you just delete them. Like there is is there a sign in their profiles?
SPEAKER_00Um often times there are, but they have to like choose to put it up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And if they're not choosing to put it in, that's your that's its own red flag. I'm just like, okay, I need more information. So I have to suddenly be like, Do you have your Enneagram number? And what time were you born in? Yeah, what city? Where were you? Yeah. Um where was your mother when you came out of her vagina? And about what time was that at?
SPEAKER_03I remember when I was uh I was trying to get John's sign, or I was trying to figure out John's uh, you know, rising and uh moon. And I I am I kept asking him, I'm like, can you just please ask your mom like what time you were born? He's like, I don't know why you need to know this. I'm like, because I'm trying to figure out some other stuff about you. He's like, but that stuff's fake. And so I uh I then went to his mother and got all the I just called her. I'm like, I need can you just tell me what time you was born? And she was just like, like she knew it off the top of her head. And uh and then I got his that was how I got his moon and his rising. Um good story, Mary. Anyway, see, I love that.
SPEAKER_00So I never got that with with my I tried and tried and tried to get it with my ex. So like I just have all I have is the I don't have all the details for him. Wow. From your ex-husband? Yeah. I never got his I never got his info. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But you know, that's a different story that um Okay, so by next week though, you will have had four dates this weekend. Will they be on different days? Will it be like one a day? Are you gonna try to double up anybody?
SPEAKER_00Maybe. Like I think doubling up is okay, especially for a first date. Like um, and so it can have got a few options like Thursday night slot, Friday night slot. I've got two slots Saturday, so like daytime and lunch, and I've got a I've got a brunch slot on Sunday.
SPEAKER_03It's really hard for you to not say that's what she said. But um, but I do think that we are gonna need a report back on this. So are you I think I mean, is the plan to keep it chaste? Like what is your what is your dating? What are your first date moves? Like, is there like a place you like to go to? Is there a type of date?
SPEAKER_00So if I'm being totally honest, like I don't I I don't date that much. Um so I took the summer off. I just it the energetics of the apps are like are simultaneously awful that someone is somewhere in their room or on their toilet looking at you and sizing you up and being like, I'd fuck her, I won't fuck her. Like like it gets heavy after a while. So I'm back on and um I think that I think a great first date, I a a walk, like going on a walk, having a coffee, lunch, fine. Um, but I think yeah, we'll things with easy end points. Things with easy endpoints that have a natural conclusion. And with your question of like keeping it chast, I think that I think that tends to be a good idea. I had a I have gotten so much more mature about sex now. And there are like a whole series of questions that an embodied person should ask prior to having intercourse with someone, and one of those is um like body count. I don't give a fuck about body count. Oh my god, can we talk about body count next? Um I've been dying to talk about this with someone. But um, so you know, like who else does this impact? What are your preferences? What are your boundaries? You know, all of those questions where you can like actually have a conversation. I feel like if I wasn't didn't know someone well enough to have that conversation about intimacy, and not to mention be like, what's your sexual health? Um, shouldn't be fucking them. There are exceptions and I am dating with intention. So um I think panties stay on. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03And if they don't, whatever. Um I'm not gonna judge myself.
SPEAKER_00Well, and also that guy just won't be, I mean, it's just kind of hard to I mean, I've But I would if I I would cancel the next date if I like I would not sleep with someone and then go on another a date with someone else.
SPEAKER_03Like have the smell of one man on you while you're with another man.
SPEAKER_00But yes, you are correct. You said it. You said the truth. I mean that's what you do.
SPEAKER_03Um I mean, I'm a truth teller. I am the seer. I am a yeah.
SPEAKER_00So okay, can can we shift gears though to talk about like the current obsession in the manosphere with body count? Have you been following along with this?
SPEAKER_03As much as I can. I mean, I I see I I see it and it gets real gross because it's always like if a if she has a big body count, I don't want to have used material. And it's like, oh honey, tell me you're not fucking anyone by tell without telling me that you're not fucking anyone. Like all of those. Why do you care? Why do you think that's true? Why do you care? Yeah. Like, don't you want someone who's who's done it enough that they know what they're doing and then like brings experience to that, or you just want to like do what you want to do and nothing else?
SPEAKER_00I just I feel for the women who are like 20 right now and like have this like really, really weird cultural underlying thing, especially in southern states where you've got like such a big Republican slash manif manosphere interest. My wife. And it's like, oh my God, like women, sex is supposed to be liberating. You're supposed to be connected to your body and you're supposed to like follow your intuition. It doesn't mean you have sex with everyone, but like if you're a person living your life, you're going to accumulate a number of partners. And that doesn't mean you're going to hell. That doesn't mean that you're dirty. It doesn't mean anything. It's like there's two sides.
SPEAKER_03I think there's two sides to that though, because I think that I mean there's probably more than two sides, but it's yes, it should be this liberating, awesome thing that, you know, you you that you can generate yourself and feel good about it. Like you don't have to have anybody there if you don't want to or need to. Yeah. Um but are you talking about self-pleasure? I'm talking about self-pleasure. You just sound a little shy about that one. But it, but it also like that helped like I I mean, as long as we're talking freely, like I didn't understand that I could even do that to myself until I went to college. And so, I mean, and and I it's the messaging you get, the way that things go down, like it just never occurred to me that that was something I could do to myself, legally or religiously, or whatever, or whatever. It just, it was, you know, that it was a bad time for that kind of stuff, especially geared towards women. But I do think that's a good question.
SPEAKER_00Can I just comment on that for a second? I'm gonna say something that's kind of like mic droppy. For so many women and girls, they learn about pleasure from a man the first time a guy fingers you and you're like, oh, that kind of hurts. Like, is it supposed to be a good one? Or like, or like, why are you doing that? That is doing those and I have the ick and all of these things. And it's like we really, I feel like, need to do a much better job of initiating our girls into under knowing and understanding their body, advocating for pleasure, advocating for what feels good. And I'm not talking about doing that recklessly, but so that you can be like, ow, no, that doesn't work for me, and and feel confident enough to explore your own body, which is a wonderful thing.
SPEAKER_03And I think that part, I mean, but on the same side of that though, is like porn. And like it is such a prevalent thing. I mean, I've already started talking to Seb about it, which it is so uncomfortable and it's so weird. But I'm like, Sebastian, I know that like at some point soon somebody's going to bring that out. And I had to be and like, you know, and kind of just because I they don't when pe when kids are getting what they know about sex from porn, it couldn't be less realistic. Like that is just not, at least not for me. It's not, I mean, I don't know. Some of it is, I suppose. But my point is, is that it's giving both boys and girls an unrealistic idea and a very easily accessible idea of what sex is. And I think that like, you know, when you just like watch a sex scene that was written by a man and it's like they get together, and like she just hikes up her skirt and he like barely pulls down his pants, and he like, and she goes, and then and then he pumps her like five times, and they both come. And I'm like, I don't, I I feel like this has gotten very randy. But anyway, my point is is that like that's that has never been my experience in my life.
SPEAKER_00So many things to say about this. Like, okay, let's go down the porn rabbit hole for a little bit. Like, so this is a big thing that um that Scott Galloway, um, he's an NYU professor, talks a lot about men and women. I actually he's um total moderate. I I respect a lot of the things that he says.
SPEAKER_03And he's I love Kara Swisher so much, and they have that podcast together. I mean, he's a smart guy. I mean, he's willing to at least be vulnerable enough to like admit that he might not have the answers to everything.
SPEAKER_00Well, anyway, so go on about Scott Galloway, go on. 100%. But so talking about men and porn is really, I have to say, when you can go and lock yourself into the bathroom, do whatever you want while your wife is out there cooking dinner, taking care of the kids, yada, yada, like that is so harmful. One, just the distraction, just the addiction. And so many men who are addicted to porn, it is destructive. It is a destructive force. If you're wondering why you're not connected to your wife and why your marriage is going to shit, it's because you're jacking off too much looking at some fuck doll of a person online who's not real. And also not to mention the ethics of Pornhub and how so much of that self-generated content is actually not consensual. And so seeing that online is um, it's horrible. So it's like if you're gonna be.
SPEAKER_03And you can tell the difference. You can tell the difference between the coerced and the I say this as if I've had a lot of experience. I mean, whatever. We all been there. We've all been there. But it does, but you can tell, I can tell when I when I see things where I'm like, that woman did not actually enjoy that, or they are definitely just that woman's not sober or whatever. And it's and and I don't think little boys are thinking about that when they are. They're not thinking about that.
SPEAKER_00And maybe they're the adults. Totally. And it's like, so instead, it's like, what's one thing to jack off and like use your imagination? Like go into your Spank Bank memory file, guys. Like use your imagination. That's fun. That's that's different. But what's getting embedded into your memory, your cellular memory is these images that you're taking in online. And sometimes for people, it's multiple, multiple times a day because it's so widely accessible. It is so available to any sort of any person. And so it starts to become this thing where it's like you're doing it in the privacy of your own phone and you don't realize how much it's actually impacting you and the way you show up in relationships, your sexual performance, your expectations in bed. And then to think that we're actually like, this is how some boys are learning about sex is so frightening. And then they go to uninitiated girls because we're not teaching them about self-pleasure, and then they're finger blasting them under the bleachers in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable while spouting off things about their work. It hurts. It's like we're creating a whole cycle of by not talking about sex, we're creating these, like this whole group of uninitiated people who don't understand like how magical sex is, how the art of the female orgasm, how important intimacy is for connection.
SPEAKER_03And so um, it's it also feels like when you're a kid, when you're when you're younger. I mean, I I was very uh not very I was sort of uh, I don't know, prude's the right word, but I just I wasn't it took me a while. Anyway, um, but uh I lost where I was going with this prude shit. What were you just saying?
SPEAKER_00I think you were saying it took you a while, but I think you were prefacing saying that like about probably like number of partners or intimacy or what you're doing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, it had to do with high school messing around. Yeah, okay. That's where I was I was it was you know, the the the things that we just kind of think are what it's supposed to be, and then that can stay with you for a really long time. And I think that especially when you're younger and you're like trying to hide from parents or whatever, like you know, you're going really fast. You know, just try to get through it as fast as possible because you just want to like, you know, you don't want to get caught. And then I feel like that then becomes what sex becomes. Like I it becomes even it's all kinds of messing around. It's like, it's like you're trying to get through it as fast as you possibly can because you think there's a there's a getting caught or whatever to it. And it it takes a long time for you can kind of like unravel that and like, wait, let's just drag this thing out for as long as we can and kind of see how it goes.
SPEAKER_00Well, and aside from that too, it's like the centering of men's pleasure over yours. Like, okay, like I am now like so there is a lot that we're getting wrong about sex, and I am trying to take that perspective into the dating world now, but it does feel like going out there and it's like, whoo, you don't know what someone's beliefs are, what how they've been shaped, and all those things.
SPEAKER_03A really I I saw something that was talking about like a really good question to ask a man when you're dating, and I'm is um, do you think that women enjoy sex as much as men do? Oh yeah. And if I feel like that's that's uh because if they're like, oh, I mean, no, no, men have it. Men like it way more than women do, then that woman is that man's never given a woman pleasure in their life or their pleasure had was nothing. Like I have a friend who recently told me that um that when they she would have sex, they're not together anymore, but that when when he after he came, sex was over. Like if she has if she wasn't done yet, it didn't matter. Once he was done having sex, sex ended.
SPEAKER_00Wait, I have had multiple s relationships like that.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I did when I yeah. I mean, I guess I did when I mean I when I was younger, that was how it was. But it was just and she was married to him for like 30 years, and it's like you went 30 years. I mean, I she's like, I would come, but if I didn't and he was done, then sex ended. And I was like, oh wow. Okay, glad that marriage is over. It's kind of like I saw this, I saw this lesbian comedian that was like talking about how somebody asked her once, um, you know, when women are having sex, how do you know when you're done? I think I've told that joke on this pod before, but yeah, like I mean, there's just and the thing is, is that I think that that's a I think it's a lot of women that ask that question too. Like where they just have it. I mean, I know I it took me a long, uh, whatever. Anyway, I'm just saying you're in the jungle. I'm in the fucking jungle, man. And you got four, and you got four slots to fill this weekend. And uh are any of them jockeying to be one of those four? Are they like trying to hang out with you?
SPEAKER_00Well, so it it gets a little I'm sorry, it gets a little bit um confusing. So like one guy, like we've been messaging now for like a week, and it's like, are you gonna ask me out? And then another one was like, like, first thing is like, what are you up to? Um, you know, let's let's meet. And then so it just depends. And so we'll see how it all goes. Um, but the problem is, is like my window of opportunity closes pretty dramatically because then the following weekend I have my kids. The weekend after that, I have friends in town. The next weekend I'm hosting a retreat. So it's like I'm fucking out of the game until September. So I gotta like, if I want to lock in something for, you know, a fall hayride or a haunted house date, because like dating in the fall is the cutest. It's the cutest.
SPEAKER_03It's the cutest. But you could also knowing that you have no time, like in like for like a couple of weeks, you could just make this a weekend of strange, you know, rip the band-aid off and maybe be a little slotty and uh and then, you know, save the real dating for later in the fall when you've got time for a roll in the hay. I've just I have literally.
SPEAKER_00That was like the cutest thing. If if that was such a you did such a great thing there, Mary, and I'm proud of you. I loved it. I don't know if we can even go on further. What did I do? What did I say? You said with the roll in the hay. Yeah, it was just perfect. It was like the perfect conclusion. Okay, but what's going on in your world? Because I know we have just a few minutes left, and I want to, I I just really my dating life and all of it really dominated our discussion.
SPEAKER_03No, it's I mean, I think that people are very especially, I mean, I think that everyone, divorced and partnered people uh and single people are all very curious about other people's dating experience. I mean, I you know, like when I I when I started, I did some online dating uh and I started dating John in 27, 2007. So uh online dating was sort of in the nascent. Did you go on Plenty of Fish? I did not because that one had a weirdly like religious element to it. But um which one? Back back in my days I was no, that was that was later. I was very like Nerve.com was one that I was on a lot. Um God, what was the other one? Nerve.com was where I kind of any R V E, I mean I guarantee you it doesn't exist anymore. It was like acquired by plenty of fish or whatever. But um and uh I it was a w what was good about it is that I felt like it like you went on a lot of dates. And so you learned very quickly. They felt like job interviews at a certain point. There was a period of time where it just felt like I was perpetually on a job interview. Okay. Um but then once I realized I was like, I'm like my when my mom got sick. My my mom when my mom started got that was around the time when I wouldn't online dating was part of my life. And um and I was like, fuck it. Like I I became a little like loosey goosey with um nerve, with your nerve endings. Yeah, with my slots. And uh but it but but I will say though that it was like it was it was good to like God, I hope Sebastian never listens to these episodes, or even John. I hope he does. I hope he does. Is that it like you you can be whoever you want to be for a while. And I I think that's what I liked was that I was like, you know, like I would be on a date with someone and I'd be like, I am never going to see this person again. So I could just say, I could say who I I could make up shit about myself. You could do whatever you need to do. Yeah. Like I could be a s a flight attendant or an ER doctor. Like it didn't matter because I was, you know, never if it was somebody I never wanted to see again, there were a lot of lies told.
SPEAKER_00Oh my God, I love this about you. I like I used to do that in chat rooms in like in 1996. I'd like pretend, I'd just like 13 with my girlfriends pretending to be a flight attendant talking to men in chat rooms. Um but I I think that the most important thing about like dating multiple people and getting to know multiple people is that you get to like start to trust your instincts. Like sometimes something that feels like a no in your body, you just you don't really know why. And it could be like, I like you just fine, but you're not my person.
SPEAKER_03And so connecting that back to body count, I think that is why men don't like the body count, is because you have a bunch of data on their competition and they don't want to know, they don't want to be compared against the guy that had the curvy dick, or they want to be compared against the guy who went down on you for 45 minutes. He doesn't want to compare it against, like, you know, the the other people. And on the more nefarious side of things, he doesn't want, you know, to know like, oh, this like the I raped this girl, I raped that girl, I raped that girl. Or I did something weird and shitty during it that wasn't technically rape, but wasn't good either. And if girls start comparing notes, so that's actually how you also get into how men try to divide women and keep them from talking to each other, and there can only be one girl in the room because if that if there's 10 women in that room and there's 20 guys, all those guys have been cycled through at one point. So like everyone knows everything about them and they don't want to know that you knew that. And it's, you know, I it's it's just I mean, it's a valid, it's a valid point. I mean, I feel like an evolved man would want a woman who's had a high body count because then or an intentional body count.
SPEAKER_00Like I mean, I think that's the main piece is it's like what like not necessarily all intentional.
SPEAKER_03You should be allowed to like have a very unintentionality.
SPEAKER_00Do whatever the fuck you want. Like that's not your whole self. And it's not that whole self. It's not any of those things. Right. I'm totally, I I'm with you. I'm with you.
SPEAKER_03Uh and so you know, when it comes, do are people asking body counts? Are they and for anybody who doesn't know, a body count is how many people you've had sex with?
SPEAKER_00By the way, like I don't know for how long. Like, ask me how many people I've had sex with.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I don't even know. Ask me.
SPEAKER_00How many? Seven. Oh, okay. That will be my answer forever and ever and ever. And it doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_03Is it kind of like a like a low enough number that doesn't sound big, but it's not high enough that a like it's like a why would I ever count? Why would I ever count? Yeah. I was single for a very long time. Stop. Anyway, uh but I haven't been for a very long time, very deeply in love with my husband. He's great.
SPEAKER_00Uh you I you guys are the cutest and I love it and I admire it. I'm striving to find the the John to my marriage. Wait.
SPEAKER_03Well, and I'm not saying I have a perfect amazing rel I mean, you know, but everything's got its ups and downs. But I think part of the reason why my marriage is at least more solid than it would have been is because I didn't I was 32 when I met him. And I feel like I had a hundred, I knew exact I mean, I didn't know exactly who I was. There was still room to grow, but like by taking the time to like, you know, I had to, I mean, um and part of that was tied to the fact that I was like so terrified of like I needed to be completely established myself financially before I like could find love because I needed to be able to like afford the life that I wanted to live without someone else. That's interesting. Yeah. Um I mean, because my you know, single mom, six kids, she very much was like, Men will suck the life out of you. So and yeah, but she basically said, Do not ever live a life you can't afford on your own.
SPEAKER_00Wait, I just got a hinge, I got just got a hinge uh message from from Maui. Let's see. Oh, was he like, you're welcome?
SPEAKER_03Is he gonna say you're welcome after the date? Get it? Oh my like Maui from Moana, nobody, anybody? Um what's he saying? What's Maui Wowie saying? Maui.
SPEAKER_00Oh, like la la la la la. Wait, I thought you were looking for a long-term relationship, not an adventure. Ha ha ha ha. I absolutely love being around the water. So whenever I get the chance, I'd love being on the lake, either on a boat or behind one on a wakeboard. I've actually never kayaked the Chicago River. I'd love to to go-kart or try iFi because both of those are on my list. So if any of those sound fun to you, I think we may have just found our first Chicago adventure. Wow. Okay. So he wants to go out on a date. But there is an excessive amount of emojis here. Um and so which makes me like my spidey sense is like, God, I'd really love to have a photo so that I can You don't know what this guy looks like? No, no. I can see him online, but I'd love to make sure he's not AI. I'd love to make sure it's not like some catfishing thing where someone is like pasting stuff into Chat GPT.
SPEAKER_03You can actually cut and paste the dialogue and put it into an AI tester and it'll tell you if it was made by via AI with like percentages. It'll be like this is 80% percent chance that it's AI. I'd run it through that.
SPEAKER_00They also get it get it wrong. Like I had friends who like put in a paper they wrote in college into an AI tester, and it's like, yep, written by AI. So um in any event, it's just like I want to make sure he's like a real person. I mean, in my using AI would be nice.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. And I also think that you I think some people write an emojis because they don't know how to write. That seems that art seems although that guy did write some pretty good sentences in there. But I do think that's some good sentences. The average person can't write the way that uh the average person used to. Um do you know what he does?
SPEAKER_00Wait, let me see. No, this one, um let me make sure let me see. Profile. Super cute. You just have to make sure I'm gonna do it. He doesn't list what his his job is. He lives in Lincoln Park, 6'2, doesn't drink.
SPEAKER_03Um you just have to make sure that if he wants to be on the lake, it's not in the playpen, right?
SPEAKER_00The playpen is like kind of a fun spot to park sometimes. But have you been in the playpen? A lot. I've been in the playpen a lot. I spent most of the summer of 2007 in the playpen. It was great. Wow. Okay. What can you walk between the boats? Yeah, it like depends on like you don't have to even be docked up with everyone else because that can like be hazardous, it's a little bit stressful. Um but you're so drunk you don't care. So drunk you don't care. Yeah. Life is life, I mean, God. We should we sh our next episode, since now I'm officially attaching myself to you, yeah, should be about all the lives we've lived for decade by decade. So many. I have been so many different people. You've always been then one sweet, tightly wound hippie.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, just one Taylor Swift note. Um God, she's amazing. They just did you listen? Did you see the video she posted yesterday? Okay, so yesterday she posted her performance from uh the Emmy or the Grammy Emmy icon, something or another. And she brought out the piano from the Eras tour, and she's like, This is my piano from the Aeros tour, and you know, I always would mash up songs, and you know, this song uh was written after the Ares tour, and I just had an idea. Like, I just was like, Oh, if we were still in the Ares tour, I'd make this, I'd do this mashup. And so she's like, I'm gonna do it for you now. And she mashes up, I knew it I knew you with August, and then goes into all too well. Can't either I cannot handle it. It's one of these things where I'm like, I I'm watching it in my kitchen crying while I was making dinner last night. And I was like thinking to myself, I am so lucky to be living at a time when Taylor Allison Swift is also living and performing. It's like, you know, I said to someone recently that it's like living through the Beatles, and they were like, fuck that. No, no, no, no, no. I'm like, she's already exceeded everything the Beatles did. All of it. She's done it all. Like, anyway. To Taylor, we adore you. I mean forever and always. I will tell you, like, my friend Michelle, um, she does you know the you know Pomodoro method where you like work for 20 minutes and you can set it. You set you like it's like for people who have like ADHD or whatever, they'll set like a timer and it's like I will work for 10 minutes, you know, and it's kind of like keep yourself from like floating away to something else. It's like I will stay on this one task for 10 minutes or I'll work. You know, they do it in like 10 minute increments, and so you can do your pomodoro, like a 20-minute Pomodoro and whatever. And because all too well is 10 minutes long, she does her Pomodoros in All Too Wells. So she'll like, so she'll be like, you know, this is a two all too wells. This is three all too wells.
SPEAKER_00Like it's kind of an away to like I really love her. That sounds just like the smartest thing that I've ever heard.
SPEAKER_03I really, really, really appreciate this. You know, also just one more thing. I want to give a shout out to John, my husband. This past weekend he did the triathlon. Oh my god. And yeah, he'd never done one before. He's always kind of like threatened to do like the marathon or whatever. And he has these these male, these guy friends who are like Sebastian's friends, dads, and they've all been kind of butt sniffing, you know. They kind of, you know, kind of hanging out. They don't know how to be friends, and so they had to like train for a triathlon together because they don't know how to just hang out.
SPEAKER_00Uh real, real, real cute.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And so uh they all train for this triathlon. They started like a month and a half ago. Well, I think the other guys were planning for a long John just decided to do it a month and a half ago. And uh he fucking destroyed it. Like he um so I I saw like they you can see on the there's like an app that tells you where the where your person's at, and you can like follow along with them. And you swim a mile. And so I I'm looking at the phone in the morning and it's like waiting for him to get he does get he gets into the water at 620. So that's and so I'm like, okay, and it gives you like an estimate of time on how long it'll be till the fine till the finish line. So it said he'd be done at 10:30. And I'm like, oh, okay. So we'll leave here at nine and you know, get down there and kind of try to find a way to get to the finish line, blah, blah, blah. And I was texting with the two other wives that who whose husbands are doing this. They weren't going downtown. They're like, I've done it before, I'm not going back down there. It sucks to like the finish line's not fun. I'm like, oh, okay. So, um, but I'm, you know, it's my first time. So uh we um so I'm like, I make a sign for him. Uh and Sebastian's still sleeping. How cute are you? And well, so you know, John's got that fish tank, and one of his fish died last week. Uh, and it was a Gobi named Conan O'Brien. And so we made a sign that was like, do it for Conan O'Brien, the fish, R. I P. Um, that's hilarious. Uh, but um he uh so he so he gets out at the water, it says it's gonna be done at 1030, and then I'm talking to the other moms, and they're like, um, John just shaved an hour off of his time. I go and look, he's now getting in at nine o'clock or an hour and a half. Because he'd never done it before. They were averaging it on like what men his age would have like if they are doing it at this pace, like what the average man would get in this. So the average man would have done it in three and a half hours, and he did it in two and a half hours. So at 8 15, I get I see that he's supposed to get done at nine. So John and I, Sebastian, I like fly into the car. I am sp get down there. We park, we run up to the finish line three minutes before John ran through. And then So you got to see him. We got to see him make it. I got a little video of him like running across the finish line. Two hours and thirty-six minutes. That's real cute. He swam a mile, he rode his bike 25 miles and ran six miles in two hours and thirty-six minutes. He is 45 years, 46 years old.
SPEAKER_01Fucking hot. I mean, that's fucking hot. Go John. Go John. This was a great. I had fun time today.
SPEAKER_03Hopefully, other people will also think this is cool. Um, I love you, Ashley. I can't wait to hear what happens with Cabin Boy Colin Farrell. Colin Fearl, get it. Uh, Maui and Sobar, because he's a sober bar owner.
SPEAKER_00Sobar. Oh, I like that one. Sobar. And maybe who knows? By then I might have some some more in the mix. Why not? Yeah. Or maybe you're married. What if you do like with you're like, fuck it, Vegas, baby. We can't do that. A kids would have a conniption. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I got it. Yeah. My mine will be a slow burn, whatever happens next. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I have a friend who um whose ex-husband started dating another woman and um and told his kids that he was dating someone. Oh, actually, we're engaged, and also we're getting married, and she's moving in next week, all of the same conversation. This sounds uh somewhat familiar. I love you. I gotta go. Love you too, bye.
